Conflict, arguments, and change are natural parts of our lives, as well as the lives of every agency, organization, and nation.

Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement among them. The disagreement may be personal, financial, political, or emotional.

When a dispute arises, often the best course of action is negotiation to resolve the disagreement.

The goals of negotiation are:

  • To produce a solution that all parties can agree to
  • To work as quickly as possible to find this solution
  • To improve, not hurt, the relationship between the groups in conflict

Conflict resolution through negotiation can be good for all parties involved. Often, each side will get more by participating in negotiations than they would by walking away, and it can be a way for your group to get resources that might otherwise be out of reach

So often in the business world a technically sound performer is promoted into a position of leadership. These promotions are often made without assessing whether the employee has the necessary leadership skills to lead the team.  It is essential that these skills are assessed and the necessary learning interventions put in place in order for the team to run effectively. 

In running a project, without the correct team and skills in place the project would fail.  The project leader needs to understand all the skills required and resource the team appropriately without with the project would fail.  Coaching seeks to guide the learner in the varying types of conversations that they may encounter. 

Once the right skills are in place, the team need to be motivated and engaged.  The leader needs to displace equal amounts of responsibility and accountability in order to gain the respect the team.  An effective leader has to have the right tool kits to manage potential situations of conflict, delegate appropriately and ensure that the team are all appropriately involved.

This module, termed “everyday skills” talks to those soft skills that equip the leader to have the right levels of confidence to run a team of effective people that feel engaged and that the leader cares for them and the progress of the project.  The module seeks to provide the leader with the necessary tool kits to manage any conversation through coaching, ask open ended questions, negotiate for the right skills, the right resources and to display commitment to the team.  The module will also provide the learner with an understanding of when to delegate and when to hold back.
