Define what Project Management is and how it differs from day to day management

The difference between Project Management and Day to Day Management is:

The starting point would be to define what exactly is a project. Most people forget that it is something that is carefully planned with an aim. The dictionary definition of what a project is, “an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim”, this will be discussed further in the brief online video. Once defining what a project is the next point would be to define what Project Management is. By referring to the notes Project Management could be understood as follows:

  • Project Management: is working towards, designing or creating a ‘something’ that has a start and an end, runs with a temporary team, and has various time, cost and scope constraints

By understanding the above, we are relaying the foundation of Project Management for those who never dealt with it before or those who require a refresher. A brief video will be provided to illustrate the content and notes in a summarized version. From here on we refer to the online presentation provided highlighting what day to day management is and our it differs from Project Management. It is highlighted in a table format clearly comparing the two. For example, day to day management requires annual planning, a stable and standard team and can be regarding as business as usual. It cannot be work off the philosophy of a once off.

By laying a strong foundation and understanding of Project Management there is enough content to move to understanding what the best practices are of Project Management and How it impacts the work environment

  • Project Management has a temporary team, has a start and end date, and it has time cost and scope constraints where as Day to Day Management does not
  • Day to Day Management has a temporary team, has a start and end date, and it has time cost and scope constraints where as Porject Management does not
  • Project Management is on going, and it has an annual planning cycle where as Day to Day Management does not
  • Project Management goes by the philosophy of 'business as usual', where as Day to Day Management is based on the philosophy of time is of the essence
