What is Multi Level Marketing?

Multi Level Marketing in a nutshell

Multi Level Marketing, also known as network marketing is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation

The myths of MLM

You may have heard Multi Level Marketing referred to as a pyramid scheme. This is quite common and rarely said in a positive way. It is understandable that it can be seen this way considering the "shape" of the model.

For the interest of being able to reply to those who suggest that Darceys is a pyramid scheme, it is important that you know what a pyramid scheme is.

Full information about pyramid schemes can be found on Action Fraud Website

The most obvious difference between Multi-Level Marketing and a Pyramid Scheme is that in a Pyramid Scheme there is no valid product for sale. There is simply the sale of an "opportunity" which in most cases is worthless or in worse cases costly! Another important point is that regardless of what level you are in the Darceys programme, you earn the same level of commission. So a rep who is managed directly by Darceys receives 25% commission and a rep who is managed by an ambassador also receives 25%.  There is no downside to being in an ambassador team.

The benefits of MLM

There are a number of benefits to becoming an Ambassador.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't want to work for themselves! Choose their own hours, never have to call in sick or struggle for childcare. Being your own boss is the ultimate draw to the Multi Level Marketing role.

Another benefit is the possibility of high earnings. There is literally limitless possibilities when you become an ambassador.  Your team can continue to grow, and as it does so do your earnings.

When you take a job as a shop floor assistant in Tesco, what are the chances of you overtaking a store manager on the pecking order? With Multi Level Marketing you can do just that. There could be an Executive ambassador 3 levels above you and there's no reason why you can't make it to Pro before they do if you are willing to give it 100%.

Being able to offer this opportunity to others is another big benefit. Knowing there is someone out there just searching for an opportunity and you could be the person to give it to them. You could help someone change their life!

What is the most noticeable sign of a Pyramid Scheme?

  • A Brochure full of luxury products
  • No Products for sale
  • A visible management structure

What is an Ambassador?

The role of Ambassador

At Darceys we pride ourselves on our personal approach to direct selling. Naturally as our team of independent representatives grow we are not always able to support each individual in their Darceys journey quite as much as we'd like.

This is where an ambassador becomes so important. Ambassadors are an extension of the management team and are the direct link between us and the representatives. The role of the Ambassador is to Recruit, train and support their own team and ensure that their downline have all the support required to make a success of their Darceys business.

Basic Ambassador Tasks

As a self-employed member of the team, there is a certain degree of freedom to how you approach being an ambassador. You are not required to put in a certain amount of hours or ask for time off to go on holiday, however, there are some basic tasks that you will need to carry out.

  1. Actively recruit new team members. This can be done online or in person but some time should be spent spreading the word each week.
  2. Create a closed group for your representatives. We have a fantastic closed group for all of our reps and it's a great resource but it is helpful to have one just for your team where you can have a more personal approach and give them extra support.
  3. Ensure that your team is kept up to date with all changes and information. I try to reach all reps with any news, however, emails can go to spam boxes, texts can go to wrong numbers and posts on the reps group can get lost so it is important that you reinforce all information given by myself and Jackie.
  4. Keep on top of reps who are due to be downgraded due to inactivity. These reps are highlighted on your ambassador statement each month.
  5. Offer to help each rep place their first order. This is a fantastic way to encourage them to take that next step, knowing that they have your support and the expectation that they will place the order. It is a vital part of the rep onboarding process which we will cover in the next section of the training.

The needs of your team members

Think back...

As a representative what kind of support did you need?

Each member of your team will have different abilities and different personalities. Some will be happy to plough on and learn as they go, some will need a bit more help and guidance to get going.

The most important thing as an ambassador is that you are available for your team when they need you. You don't need to be in touch with them constantly but it is a good idea to have a communication plan set up, for example once they have been a rep for 5 days give them a call and see if they need any assistance with placing an order etc.

A positive attitude is a must! Often when a new rep starts it takes some time for them to build their customer base, it can be slow and they can become deflated. You need to be the positive influence keeping them motivated.

The On-boarding Process

Upgrading from a customer to a representative

This is the very first step in the Darceys journey and it is an important one.

Signing up on the website is very simple. The representative visits the recruitment page on our website and fills in their contact details.

One of the fields in the form is: How did you hear about us?

There is an option there for "Ambassador" which produces a text box when ticked. Your rep should put your name in this box so that we know which ambassador team they are in.Once they have successfully signed up on the website, they can request to upgrade to being a rep, to do this they should click on the upgrade button in their account and insert their email and password. This will then send a request to head office for upgrade.

Representative Training

Before being accepted as a Representative, they will need to complete a short training module on product knowledge. It outlines what we do and why we do it, and it's important that they know this stuff before getting started. Once they have clicked to update they will get an email from head office with a link to the training module. When the training module is complete they will be accepted as a rep.

At the moment the training is sent automatically by the website when they fill in the form and ask to upgrade.  Then I need to check the training schedule to see who has completed the training then I accept them manually. This means that it doesn't always happen straight away so please make sure they are aware of this.

Being accepted into the team

When a new rep completes the product knowledge training, an email is sent to head office to flag a new rep.

The representative is then accepted and will receive an email welcoming them to the team and giving them brief instructions of how to get started.

Joining the closed group on Faceboook

The welcome email includes a link to the closed Facebook group for representatives and advises all new reps to join. Being part of the reps group is a huge part of the support process, I would advise that you recommend joining the group.

CEO Phone Call

After a trial of personal phone calls to new representatives we found that it was well received and definitely helped get them off to a good start, so we decided to incorporate it into the communication strategy.

Now when a new representative joins the team they will receive a personal phone call from CEO Jackie within a few days to welcome them to the team.

Ambassador Phone Call/Visit

The final part of the onboarding process is a call from the ambassador to check everything is going well. This should happen around 5-7 days after the rep has signed up.It is a good idea at this point to offer to take them through the process of placing their first order if they haven't already done so.

Who can a representative expect a call from after a few days of signing up?

Ambassador Criteria

Minimum Order

At Darceys we would like to encourage all reps to become ambassadors as long as they fit a few criteria.

The first of which is that they have received some Darceys products.  We don't accept new reps to the ambassador programme until they have ordered products to the value of £28.50 or more and have had time to receive them. Recruiting someone to sell products that you haven't even tried yourself is not very productive.

There are direct selling companies who allow promotion to sales leadership from day one, this means that there are potentially representatives out there going on a recruiting spree without properly understanding the Company or what it represents.

Performance

In order to be an ambassador and train a new representative to perform well, they must be performing themselves.

Once you are in the programme you will need to reach the minimum of £150 personal sales in the month to earn your team commission for Junior Ambassador and Ambassador levels.

Once you reach Senior Ambassador Level your personal sales will need to be £200 per month to qualify at that level.

If your sales are between £150 and £200 but you meet all other criteria of Senior ambassador you will be processed as Ambassador for that month.

Personal Qualities

At Darceys we believe in inclusion for all, you don't need any qualifications or experience to become an Ambassador, however there are certain personal qualities we would expect our Ambassadors to have.

1. Approachable - Being an Ambassador means working with people who will ask a lot of questions. You need to be prepared to give a warm and helpful response at all times, even if the questions has been asked a number of times before.

2. Positive attitude - At certain times in the year sales slow down, this can lead to demotivation within the representatives and if it gets hold of a team it can spread. As the team Ambassador it is up to you to keep the team motivated.

3. Assertive - There are some people who join direct selling because they think they can make a lot of money with little effort. If you are taking part in this programme then I'm sure you are already aware that this is not the case. These people are quite often the most vocal with a negative attitude when people aren't knocking their door looking for candles. It is important that you are able to diffuse this situation by, firstly ensuring that the person has been given adequate support and then by cutting them loose if it really isn't working. There is no shame in suggesting that this might not be the right career path for them if you feel that it genuinely isn't working. Direct selling is not for everyone.

4. A thick Skin - This leads on from the last point. Sometimes, no matter how much effort you put into motiviting a team member, they still just don't perform well. If you know you have supported them to the best of your abilities, don't let it get you down that it isn't working. Focus on those who are putting in the effort.

5. Positive image - If you are going to be using social media to recruit people, it is advisable that your profile picture is not one of you in a compromising position. A simple headshot looks professional and prospective representatives are more likely to take you seriously. The same goes for doing physical recruitment such as door to door, leaflet drop etc. This is work and you should be dressed appropriately to represent the company as a person of authority.

The Nomination Process

Darceys Ambassador Nomination

Being an Ambassador is a very important role, you could be the key to changing someones life by offering them this fantastic opportunity.

Finding new representatives is just the start, you also need to find representative who would be fantastic Ambassadors, and more importantly ensure that they are up for the job when they decide they'd like to do it.

This is why we have created the Ambassador nomination process.

When a rep gets in touch to say they are interested in team building it is up to you to take them through what being an Ambassador is all about. A good place to start is sharing the "Guide to being an Ambassador" that I created. You can find it here. I would strongly suggest bookmarking the page so that you can find it easily.

Once you feel that they are ready and you have confirmed that they have received some products you can nominate them using the nomination form which can be found here. This is another page I would recommend bookmarking for easy access.

What do you have to do before joining the Ambassador Programme?

Compensation

As you can see from the table, the amount of commission you earn depends on the level you reach as an ambassador.

I aim to have all commission statements sent out on the 1st day of the month, or first Monday if the first day falls at the weekend. As this is done manually and there are a lot of reps it may take slightly longer to have it sent out.

Commission is paid on Net Sales (Sales minus commissions)
