Memory

This course will cover two types of memory--working and long term memory. Working memory will cover the first section, and it deals with memory we are currently manipulating. Long term memory will be covered in the second section, and will cover memory we have stored and retrieve back into working memory.

Working Memory

Short-term memory is more complicated than information we received within the last 30 seconds of rehearsal. Our current understanding of short-term memory consists of every component within working memory. These are the central executive, phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad, and episodic buffer.

Long Term Memory

Much like working memory, long term memory has multiple parts. There are two main types of memory--explicit and implicit memory. Explicit memory makes up memory we are conscious of. Implicit memories are unconscious memories. Each of these types of memories is broken down further into sub-types. These two systems work together, but are also separate. Think about a person with retrograde amnesia. Even though they cannot remember their past, they can still practice their learned skills, such as playing the piano. Interesting!
