The Global Education Cluster’s Core Skills Training requires that all participants have a basic level of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills related to cluster coordination prior to arriving to the Residential part of the training.

We have therefore prepared four modules with accompanying assignments to be completed and submitted according to the specified due dates. 

Each module will contain a theory-based assignment as well as a practical Information Management (IM) focused assignment. 

To qualify to attend the face-to-face portion of this course, you must complete and submit all assignments in Modules 1-4 on time.

Assignment: Read the information in this module pertaining to Humanitarian Response Info and Humanitarian ID and complete the Exercise at the end.

Module 4a (Theory): Introduction to Humanitarian Response Info

The Humanitarian Response Info is the primary information source for humanitarians worldwide. It is the first place to look for information and it is maintained by OCHA. You can get Education Cluster information and tools and main information on humanitarian responses, also for Donors, OCHA, HQ. 

You can access the Humanitarian Response Info page under the following link: https://www.humanitarianresponse.info.

Once in the Humanitarian Response Info page, you can find the most important Countries and humanitarian responses on the left of the page (red circle).

If you then click on one country, for example Ukraine, you can access the Ukraine Humanitarian Response Info page.


Once in the Ukraine Humanitarian Response Info page, you can find all the relevant information on the humanitarian response in Ukraine on the top of the page (red circle), such as Contacts, Documents, Datasets etc. You can also find all the relevant clusters working in Ukraine on the left of the page (orange circle).

If you then click on Education, you can access the Ukraine Humanitarian Response Education Cluster page.


The  Ukraine Humanitarian Response Education Cluster page is maintained by the Education Cluster staff and you can find all the relevant information related with the Education Cluster on the top of the page (red circle). You can download documents, find contacts, looking for events etc.


Module 4a (Theory): Introduction to Humanitarian ID

The Humanitarian ID is a single contacts management app for everyone working in humanitarian crisis and disasters. It makes easier and faster for humanitarian professionals from across the globe to connect, communicate and collaborate.

You can access the Humanitarian ID page under the following link: https://humanitarian.id/.

You can create your own profile by clicking on Register (red circle). Then You will be asked to sign up for an account.


Once registered, you will be asked to provide some information about yourself. You can update anytime your personal information by clicking on your profile (red circle).

When you start working in a new emergency make sure to check in that emergency to be added to the contact list and receive relevant information. Once checked in, you can search for the people working there. Remember to check out once you leave the emergency. 

To check in, click on Check In (orange circle). 

Type the Emergency you are responding to (orange circle) and provide your details to check in that emergency.

Module 4a (Theory): Exercise

Using the knowledge and skills acquired in the lessons of Module 4a, please follow the steps below.

  1. Access the Humanitarian ID page and register/sign up.
  2. Register by providing contacts and professional information
  3. Once registered, check into “Simulation/Training” (Hint: click on check in on the right top of the page and type “Simulation/Training” under "Select Lists". Then provide your details and click on check me in)
  4. Access the Humanitarian Response Info page. Under Operations (on the left of the page) search for “Simulation/Training”. Under Contacts (on the top of the page), check if your contact has been added. 


Export as PDF "Simulation/Training" Contact List and send it to the Global Education Cluster at [email protected]

Exercise

  1. If you don’t have Skype, download the program and sign up for a free Skype Account: http://www.skype.com/
  2. Search Skype for the Global Education Cluster Help Desk (“help.edcluster”), add the Help Desk to your Contacts and ask the burning question related to EiE you were interested in for ages
  3. Add Education Cluster Core Skills Course ("clustercoreskills") to your contacts
  4. Create a new Group called “[Your Name]'s Core Skills Course Group” and add the Education Cluster Core Skills Course ("clustercoreskills") and Global Education Cluster Help Desk ("help.edcluster")
  5. Send the following message: "I now know how to set up a Skype Group. I'm amazing!"

  4. Invite the Global Education Cluster at [email protected] to collaborate with you on this folder as an editor

Exercise

  1. If you don’t have an account, sign up for a free Office Online Account
  2. Upload your completed Excel contact list from Module 1b's Exercise to Excel Online and rename it: '[Your Name]'s Contact List'
  3. Invite the Education Cluster at [email protected] as an editor to your online version of the contact list
  4. Send us the following Skype message (Skype ID: clustercoreskills): "I have shared my online contact list with you. Are you able to access it?  P.S. You're amazing!"

Mailchimp – Beginner’s Tutorial

Exercise

  1. Sign up for a free Mailchimp Account: http://mailchimp.com/.
  2. Complete the background information and confirm your account
  3. Set up a contact list (“Lists”) and import the contact list from Module 1b's Exercise into Mailchimp
  4. Set up an email (“Campaigns”), include a “Global Education Cluster Logo” as a header, a link to the “UNICEF Cluster Guidance to Country Offices”, the Excel Online document and send the email to the complete contact list.
