SECTION 2. Bicycle road rules and safety

Important rules you must know

Read the following text and try to remember the key point, then you will be required to do TURE/FALSE and fill blank questions.

Bicycle equipment

1. You and passengers must wear an approved bicycle helmet.

2. There is no law that prohibits the attachment of a camera to a bicycle helmet.

3. Your bicycle must have at least 1 working brake and a working bell, horn or a similar warning device.

4. If you ride at night or in weather conditions, you must display a white light from the front of the bicycle, a red light and a red reflector from the back of the bicycle.

Towing & Riding with a person in a bicycle trailer

You must not:

1. ride a bicycle that is being towed by another vehicle

2. hold on to a moving vehicle while riding a bicycle

3. lead an animal while riding a bicycle.

You can tow a child in or on a bicycle trailer if:

1. you are 16 years or older

2. the child is under 10 years old and is wearing an approved helmet that is securely fitted and fastened

3.the bicycle trailer can safely carry the child.

When you ride on road

1. You must keep at least 2m between you and the back of a vehicle when you follow that vehicle for over 200m.

2. You must avoid being a traffic hazard—do not ride into the path of a driver or pedestrian.

3. ride as close as possible to the left side (or on the road shoulder) on a single lane road. Or, you may take up any position within the lane on a multi-lane road

4. ride to the left of any oncoming vehicle

5. not overtake another vehicle on the left if that vehicle is indicating and turning left

6. not overtake another vehicle on the left if it is not safe

7. not ride with more than 2 riders side by side unless you are overtaking another rider

8. ride no more than 1.5m apart, if travelling beside another rider.

What should you do before crossing a road by bicycle?

  • Look at your right side and left and right side again to make sure there is no vehicle coming
  • Just ride across the road without any attention
  • Just look at your right side only to make sure there is no vehicle coming from your right side
  • Just look at your left side only to make sure there is no vehicle coming from your left side

What should you do when you reach to a STOP sign?

  • stay there for 5 mins
  • No stop at all
  • stop there and look at all traffic ways to make sure there is no any vehicles coming before proceeding
  • stay there for 5 seconds and go

What should you do when you intend to pass pedestrian?

  • Just go ahead passing them without any signal
  • warn them by belling in advance
  • you cannot pass any pedestrian, just follow them
  • yell out to the people before passing

What should you do when you feel uncomfortable while riding to a injunction?

  • keep riding with uncomfortable
  • dismount and walking with bike to cross the injunction
  • dispose the bicycle
  • dismount and running across the injunction.
