Software training: Adobe InDesign CC

Hi there! Welcome to hypermouse on demand!

This course has been designed for those unable to attend live hypermouse sessions. I have tried to include all of the tricks and techniques that would normally get covered in a hypermouse session set.

Good luck with the course!

Adobe InDesign CC an introduction

What Adobe InDesign is designed to do

What InDesign does

Adobe InDesign is a frame-based page layout program designed to let users construct pages using combinations of Text and Graphic frames.

The interface

Adobe InDesign is a Panel based application. It is virtually impossible to learn or use InDesign by looking through the Menu options. If you do need to find a panel, simply go to the Windows menu.

The basic page layout environment

The basic interface is comprised of 5 major areas;

  1. The navigation bar
  2. The Control Panel
  3. The Tool Bar – it will initially appear as a single column.

Areas where InDesign is not ideal

Some people choose to use InDesign to work…

Workspaces – an introduction

Working with Workspaces

What is a Workspace?

Workspace is the term Adobe uses to describe the mechanism used to record which Panels have been chosen, those Panel's settings and where they have been placed on the screen.

Essentials Workspace

When you first open up a New or existing InDesign document, you will find yourself in the Essentials Workspace. The Toolbar will appear as a single column and the right-hand Panel set will be comprised of the Pages, Layers, Links, Stroke, Colour and Swatches Panels.

While all these Panels are useful, several other key ones are missing.

The Advanced Workspace

A much better starting workspace is the Advanced Workspace. Activate it by going to the Window Menu, choose the sub-menu Workspace and choose [Advanced]

This workspace will add the following Panels: Gradient, CC Libraries, Effects, Object Styles, Paragraph Styles and Character Styles.

Building a better Workspace

Although Advanced is better than the Essentials Workspace, there are still some other Panels that really need to be added before a proper, practical Workspace will be ready for real-world use.

Adding more panels

The following Panels will prove very useful and should be added to the Advanced Workspace: Info, Align, Pathfinder,

Setting up your Preferences in Adobe InDesign CC

General Preferences

General Preferences

While most of these settings will work, however, there are a couple of settings that should be adjusted, depending on your particular usage.

  1. The Show “Start” Workspace When No Documents Are Open
  2. The ‘Prevent Selection of Locked Objects’ tick box should be ticked if you work as an Editor and you want to be able to lock the structure of a page but still be able to edit the text content in a frame.
  3. Check the ‘When Scaling:’ options to suit how you prefer attributes on objects to behave when you scale them during construction and editing.
