LCS: Getting Started

This course will teach you the basics on how to use LCS, the UK's leading children's social care case management software.

There are 6 modules to complete:

  1. Logging in and out
  2. Navigating the home screen
  3. Searching for a person
  4. Creating a new record
  5. Adding relationships and professional involvements
  6. Creating Contacts and progressing to Referrals

Logging in and out

How to log in

Logging in

There are 3 stages to complete:

  1. Login ID
  2. Password
  3. Secret question / answer

The Password stage is the only case sensitive stage. Your password will expire and must be changed every 30 days. You will be asked to change it following completion of the other 3 stages.

Once you have successfully logged in, the system will load on the Tiles screen.

How to log out

Logging out

Hover the mouse over your username in the top right of the screen. Select Log Out and confirm by clicking OK

Organising trays

Work trays can be reorganised to help prioritise tasks. Tasks can be grouped as follows:

  • Date - by due date of the task
  • Subject - categorised by task
  • Priority - in order of task priority
  • Person - in alphabetical order by person surname
  • Address - group tasks together by people living at the same address
  • Referral Group - group tasks together for sibling groups

Key things to note when searching for a record in LCS:

  • You can search on the persons unique ID in the Identifier field
  • % or * can be used as wildcards to assist searches if you don't know correct spellings 
  • 4 digit years must be used on date fields
  • A maximum of 100 results are returned on searches, refine your search if this happens

What is the correct date format to use when searching on a person's date of birth?

  • Forename, Surname, Gender and Primary Address are mandatory and marked red
  • More information can be added to the Additional and Identity tabs
  • Future DOBs can be added for unborn children
  • When adding an address, only 30 results will return in the search so refine your search in these cases

Adding relationships and professional involvements

Basic Demographics

Adding Relationships

Relationships in LCS are people that are linked to the person in some way, usually relatives but also friends, neighbours or foster carers.

There are 2 ways of adding Relationships:

  1. Suggest - automatically searches the system for people that live at the same address or have mutual relationships with the subject
  2. Search and create - allowing the user to manually add relatives

Professional Involvements

Professional Involvements and Key Agencies are the professionals working around the child or family. Examples are: 

  • Social Worker 
  • Independent Reviewing Officer
  • Police 
  • GP 
  • Teacher

Every open case must always have an Allocated Social Worker, all other roles are optional.

Creating Contacts and progressing to Referrals

Creating a Contact Record

  • Contact Records must be completed to create a Social Care Referral. They are started from the Personal tab
  • The system will automatically consolidate siblings that are linked on the Relationships tab
  • Mandatory fields are marked in red and must be completed before the Contact Record can be finalised

Contact Outcomes

Suggested Outcomes must be chosen before completing a Contact Record. If you wish to create a Social Care Referral you must select the outcome of Progress to Referral.

Consolidating siblings

  • The system will automatically consolidate siblings that are linked on the Relationships tab
  • The system will automatically link children that live at the same address
