Home & Vehicle Modification Program: Overview

This tutorial will provide an overview of the Home & Vehicle Modification Program facilitated by March of Dimes Canada.

Program Introduction

What is the Home & Vehicle Modification Program?

The Home & Vehicle Modification Program (HVMP) was created by the Government of Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Although it was created by the government, March of Dimes Canada is responsible for administering the program in Ontario.

The Program provides funding for basic home and vehicle modifications to improve engagement, independence, and quality of life for individuals with mobility impairments.

Who is Eligible?

Applicant Eligibility

To be eligible for the Home & Vehicle Modification Program, an applicant must:

  1. Live in Ontario.
  2. Have a substantial impairment caused by bodily injury, birth defect, or illness that ongoing or recurring  and is expected to last for at least one year.
  3. Face limited mobility or restricted ability to complete activities of daily living (e.g. personal care, community functioning).

Who Can Apply?

In addition to meeting the Applicant Eligibility outlined above, the applicant must also be one of the following: 

  1. A Homeowner:
    • Seeking to modify their home for themselves.
    • Seeking to modify their home on behalf of an eligible family member.
  2. A Tenant:
    • Applying for funding for portable assistive devices.
    • Applying for funding on behalf of an eligible family member.
  3. A Vehicle Owner:
    • Applying for a modification to their vehicle.
    • Applying for a modification to their vehicle on behalf of an eligible family  member.
  4. A "Host Family":
    • Applying for a home or vehicle modification on behalf of a child or adult with a disability who is being cared for by the family in the long-term.

Possible Funding

Consumers who are eligible may receive up to:

  • $15,000 for Home Modifications
  • $15,000 for Vehicle Modifications

Funding Availability

  • For home modifications, a person will generally only be granted funding once.  There are exceptions to this.  For more information, please contact Program staff.
  • For vehicle modifications, a person can be granted funding once in ten years.
  • It is the applicant's responsibility to thoroughly investigate alternative available sources of public or private funding before applying to the Home & Vehicle Modifications Program.

Financial Calculation

Financial Calculation

The financial calculation is used to determine if the applicant is required to contribute to the the funding.  Client contribution is determined  based on assessing the following incomes, where applicable:

  • The applicant.
  • The applicant's spouse or partner.
  • The applicant's parent(s) if the applicant is under 18.

How Do I Apply?

The Application Process

  1. Familiarize yourself with the Application Tutorials located on the March of Dimes website.
  2. Complete your application either online or in print.
  3. Gather the required supporting documents.
  4. Submit your complete application (the Applicant Assessment and all necessary documents) to March of Dimes Canada by:
    • Fax.
    • E-mail.
    • Mail.
  5. Within number of days, a Program employee will be in contact with you regarding the status of your application.

Incomplete Applications

Incomplete applications submitted to March of Dimes Canada will not be reviewed. In most cases, a Program employee will contact you regarding the problems with your application and ask that you resubmit a complete application.

To avoid this and any delays in processing your application, please ensure your application has all the appropriate documents attached before submitting it.
