Occupations

a person's usual or principal work or business, especially as a means of earning a living, any activity in which a person is engaged.

teacher

Teacher

A teacher (also called a school teacher or, in some contexts, an educator) is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values.

Informally the role of teacher may be taken on by anyone (e.g. when showing a colleague how to perform a specific task). In some countries, teaching young people of school age may be carried out in an informal setting, such as within the family, (homeschooling) rather than in a formal setting such as a school or college. Some other professions may involve a significant amount of teaching (e.g. youth worker, pastor).

In most countries, formal teaching is usually carried out by paid professional teachers. This article focuses on those who are employed, as their main role, to teach others in a formal education context, such as at a school or other place of initial formal education or training.

doctor

doctor

After providing diagnoses, a doctor treats patients who are suffering from diseases and injuries. A doctor is also called a physician and is often referred to as either an M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine).

M.D.s and D.O.s both use traditional treatment methods such as drugs and surgery, but D.O.s emphasize the body's musculature system, preventative medicine, and holistic patient care.

Doctors can be primary care physicians, or they may specialize in a particular area of medicine such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatry, endocrinology, ophthalmology, or anesthesiology.

police

police

A police officer, also known as a policeman, policewoman, police agent, or a police employee[1][2] is a warranted law employee of a police force. In most countries, "police officer" is a generic term not specifying a particular rank. In most police departments of the United States, "police officer" or "officer" is also the rank held by a regular police officer (i.e. one without supervisory duties). In some nations the use of the rank "officer" is legally reserved for military personnel.

Police officers are generally charged with the apprehension of criminals and the prevention and detection of crime, protection and assistance of the general public, and the maintenance of public order. Police officers may be sworn to an oath, and have the power to arrest people and detain them for a limited time, along with other duties and powers. Some police officers may also be trained in special duties, such as counter-terrorism, surveillance, child protection, VIP protection, civil law enforcement, and investigation techniques into major crime including fraud, rape, murder, and drug trafficking. Although many police officers wear a corresponding uniform, some police officers are plain-clothed in order to dissimulate as ordinary citizens.

soldier

soldier

The term “professional” is a word that can be defined in many ways by differing points of view. I will be defining it from a military profession or "a profession of arms" point of view. Now we must understand that other professions will have vastly different and varying points of view.

In the profession of arms, it is our duty to do things that other Americans would, or could, not do. We, as Americans, are taught from childhood to respect the lives and freedoms of others. In turn, we want our lives and freedoms respected. This we know as the "Golden Rule". But it is our duty as professional Soldiers to, when necessary, infringe in the highest manner possible on another human being's rights by taking his/her life. The duty to lawfully take another human being's life is reserved only for those who truly understand the burden of that duty. The responsibility this duty brings is the highest, hardest and most challenging responsibility that can be given to anyone. Since the beginning of time, the Soldier has been entrusted with the burden of that duty.

pilot

pilot

An aircraft pilot or aviator is a person who controls the flight of an aircraft by operating its directional flight controls. While other aircrew members such as navigators or flight engineers are also considered aviators, because they are involved in operating the aircraft´s flight systems, they are not pilots and do not command a flight or aircraft. Other aircrew members such as flight attendants, mechanics and ground crew, are not classified as aviators.

In recognition of the pilots' qualifications and responsibilities, most militarizes and many airlines worldwide award aviator badges to their pilots, and this includes naval aviators.

actor

actor

An actor (often actress for females; see terminology) is a person who portrays a character in a performance. The actor performs "in the flesh" in the traditional medium of the theatre, or in modern mediums such as film, radio, and television. The analogous Greek term is ὑποκριτής (hupokritḗs), literally "one who answers". The actor's interpretation of their role pertains to the role played, whether based on a real person or fictional character. Interpretation occurs even when the actor is "playing themselves", as in some forms of experimental performance art, or, more commonly; to act, is to create, a character in performance.

Formerly, in some societies, only men could become actors, and women's roles were generally played by men or boys. When used for the stage, women occasionally played the roles of prepubescent boys.

lawyer

lawyer

A lawyer is a person who practices law, as an advocate, barrister, attorney, counselor or solicitor or chartered legal executive. Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who hire lawyers to perform legal services.

The role of the lawyer varies greatly across legal jurisdictions, and so it can be treated here in only the most general terms.

chef

chef

The chef de cuisine is in charge of all activities related to the kitchen, which usually includes menu creation, management of kitchen staff, ordering and purchasing of inventory and plating design. Chef de cuisine is the traditional French term from which the English word chef is derived. Head chef is often used to designate someone with the same duties as an executive chef but there is usually someone in charge of a head chef, possibly making the larger executive decisions such as direction of menu, final authority in staff management decisions etc. This is often the case for executive chefs with multiple restaurants.

barber

barber

A barber (from the Latin barba, "beard") is a person whose occupation is mainly to cut, dress, groom, style and shave men's and boys' hair. A barber's place of work is known as a "barber shop" or a "barber's". Barber shops are also places of social interaction and public discourse. In some instances, barbershops are also public forums. They are the locations of open debates, voicing public concerns, and engaging citizens in discussions about contemporary issues. They were also influential in helping shape male identity.

In previous times, barbers (known as barber surgeons) also performed surgery and dentistry. With the development of safety razors and the decreasing prevalence of beards, in English-speaking cultures, most barbers now specialize in cutting men's scalp hair as opposed to facial hair.

astronaut

astronaut

An astronaut or cosmonaut (Russian: космонавт) is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. Although generally reserved for professional space travelers, the terms are sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.

Starting in the 1950s up to 2002, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or by civilian space agencies. With the suborbital flight of the privately funded Spaceship One in 2004,a new category of astronaut was created: the commercial astronaut.
