Start writing here:  A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a breakdown and presentation of a hierarchical structure of a project into smaller components. It gives the people involved a view into the work required by the project. It is a tool which can be used to easily communicate the work and processes involved to execute the project. It is used by the Project Manager and the team to develop the project schedule, resources and cost.

The WBS defines and groups a project’s work elements or tasks in a way that helps organise and define the total scope of the project. A work breakdown structure element may be a product, data or service, it can also be a combination of these elements. The WBS also provides the framework for a detailed cost estimating and control. It provides guidance for schedule development and control.

 When creating a work breakdown structure (WBS), the Project Manager defines the key objectives first and then identifies the tasks required to reach those goals. The WBS takes the form of an upside-down tree diagram, with the trunk at the top and the branches below. When completed, a well-structured WBS resembles a flowchart in which all elements are logically connected, redundancy is avoided and no critical elements are left out.
