Math Methods-Allison Roxburgh

Welcome to Math Methods for Elementary Teachers! We will be learning how to implement the best strategies in mathematics. I hope you find this course to be valuable as you begin your teaching journey.

Addition and Subtraction

We will be using the book "Putting Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction into Practice K-2" from NCTM.

Addition

After reading chapter one, think of how to answer this question:

How do you think you might start using a context for learning addition and subtraction with kindergartners?

Subtraction

After reading chapter two, think of how to answer this question:

Do you think students find subtraction more challenging to understand? Why or why not?

Types of Questions

When teaching you need to be aware of the types of questions you ask students because there should be a balance between the types, and each type can serve a particular purpose when teaching mathematics.

Common Core State Standards Math Problem Types

It is important to teach all types of problems and not just use one particular type. When students are given opportunity to use all types of problems they have a better foundation in problem solving.

Addition and Subtraction

We will be using the book "Putting Essential Understanding of Multiplication and Division into Practice 3-5" from NCTM.

Distributive Property of Multiplication

This video shows how to use physical manipulatives to represent the distributive property.

Distributive Property of Division

This video shows how the algorithm of long division and the distributive property are related.
