What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a serious, lifelong conditions where your blood glucose level is too high because your body can’t make a hormone called insulin. About 10% of people with diabetes in the UK have Type 1. Nobody is quite sure why it happens.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition in which your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, or the insulin it does make doesn’t work properly. About 90% of people in the UK with diabetes have Type 2

What are the common causes of Type 2 diabetes?

In type 2 the exact causes aren’t known but several factors can make developing it more likely. They include being overweight, having a family history of diabetes and getting older. If you are of South Asian or Afro-Caribbean origin you are at least five times more likely to develop diabetes than if you are white.
