Individuals are often resistant to change in the workplace because a change could indicate to a worker that their performance needs improvement.

Resistance to change by individuals within an organization are influenced by:

  • Managers
  • Co-workers

Manager's influence

Managers

A manager's reaction to change can influence  how a worker will react to potential changes.

The attitude towards change, both positive and negative will impact a worker's reaction.

Co-worker's influence

Co-workers

Peer pressure from co-workers can influence how an individual reacts to change.

People are often influenced by their social group, and peer pressure can encourage an individual to be resistant towards change.

Cynicism

Employees often feel cynical about the change process.

Cynicism occurs when employees have been through multiple rounds of change and nothing appears to have changed.
