Augmented reality(AR) is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality(VR), which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.

In the past few years, AR has combined with our lives at a very fast pace, and our education is no exception. Below, we will discuss the use and topic of AR in education through several thematic units.

1. The definition of "AR"

What is Augmented Reality ?

Augmented reality (AR) is a type of interactive and reality-based display environment, or simply said as the new level of integration of digital information that has the capabilities of computer generated display, sound, text and effects to enhance the user's real-world experience. Augmented reality combines real and computer-based scenes and images to deliver a unified but enhanced view of the world. Unlike virtual reality (VR), which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.

Augmented reality has many different implementation models and applications, but its primary objective is to provide a rich audiovisual experience. AR works by employing computerized simulation and techniques such as image and speech recognition, animation, head-mounted and hand-held devices and powered display environments to add a virtual display on top of real images and surroundings.

The basic goal of an AR system is to enhance the user’s perception of and interaction with the real world through supplementing the real world with 3D virtual objects that appear to coexist in the same space as the real world. AR systems have the following properties:

1) Blend real and virtual, in a real environment

2) Real-time interactive

3) Registered in 3D

Here, registration refers to the accurate alignment of the virtual and real objects. Without accurate registration, the illusion that the virtual objects exist in the real environment is severely compromised.

The Disadvantage of AR

  • People are missing out on what is right in front of them in real world.
  • Lack of privacy.
  • Quite expensive to develop and maintain.

Applications in Game

Gaming is one of the hottest industry when it comes to augmented reality and virtual reality. There are plenty of augmented reality examples in the gaming space. In a typical AR gaming experience, the developer superimposes a pre created game environment over real world objects.

The game Pokémon Go uses camera, gyroscope, clock, and GPS to provide a breakthrough gaming experience to the user. The game brings in Pokémon on the user's’ screen which is blended in the real environment using camera and GPS technology. The game made thousands of users leave the comforts of their desks and go out to hunt Pokémons.

Applications in Retail

In retail, augmented reality can be used to improve the buyer’s experience by bridging the gap between the perception of the product and the actual product. By using augmented reality, buyers can know the size and look of the product in a much realistic way. This solves one of the biggest problem faced by online retailers today.


Built using Apple’s new Augmented Reality ARKit, the app includes 3D and true to scale models of everything from sofas and arm chairs, to foot stools and coffee tables. Giving you an accurate impression of the furniture’s size, design and functionality in your home.

Applications in Military

Augmented reality is used by the military to simulate real war experiences and situations in order to provide better training to the soldiers. Augmented reality is not only beneficial for field troops but also for the air force. Data like altitude, enemy location and airspeed can be provided seamlessly to the pilots through the heads-up display. Though it sounds like a small advantage, it can save precious seconds in emergencies and war situations.

Heads-Up Display (HUD):

The term "heads-up" name applies because the pilot doesn't have to look down at the aircraft's instrumentation to get the data he needs.

Head-Mounted Display (HMD):

The term is used by ground troops. Critical data such as enemy location can be presented to the soldier within their line of sight. This technology is also used for simulations for training purposes.

Applications in Advertising or Marketing

From creating a better buying experience for the customers to increasing the level of engagement, augmented reality is proving to be very helpful for the marketers. Many advertising campaigns are planned using augmented reality technologies to stand-out from the competition.

By using a dedicated Starbucks AR app to scan their cups users could watch the design come to life.

Applications in Medicine

Medical students use AR technology to practice surgery in a controlled environment. Visualizations aid in explaining complex medical conditions to patients. Augmented reality can reduce the risk of an operation by giving the surgeon improved sensory perception.

Applications in Navigation

Navigation applications are possibly the most natural fit of augmented reality with our everyday lives. Enhanced GPS systems use augmented reality to make it easier to get from point A to point B. Using the smartphone's camera in combination with the GPS, users see the selected route over the live view of what is in front of the car.

Many participants in an AR learning exercise agree that the AR tools are good but most participants do not consider the tools to be as effective as reading textbooks. They find that using AR tools to obtain information is not easy. The reason might be that although the AR tool itself is easy to operate, the procedure of sending the image, recognizing the text and then getting the meaning of the text is time-consuming. This is because the technology used the 3G network to connect to the Internet. Accordingly, the participants may need to wait a short time for the information to be sent back from the server.


Increased Internet access will give students the opportunity to use AR via a smartphone. This has the potential to make AR a powerful learning tool that can help students to gain content knowledge and maintain that knowledge through their interactions with the smartphone activities.

The advantages and beneficial uses of AR features are able to help improve their visualization skills and engage students in learning processes. These features can also help teachers to explain well and make the students understand better what they are taught in class. 

The use of AR technology has also received mixed feedback from participants and students who have shown their interest in using AR in their learning processes. The good responses are important because they indicate the willingness of students to actively engage in their studies through AR tools. 

As we know, AR technology is still very new in education and there are still some limitations. However, the review of the research indicates that most of the limitations are related to technical issues (read-network issue). Such limitations can be overcome over time as research on the integration of AR in education is replicated and improved. 

When the potential of AR technologies is more fully explored, the beneficial functions of AR can begin to be used widely in all fields of education and the efficiency of the teaching and learning process will be improved.

Nowadays, the development of technology has a lot to do with teaching methods. Virtual reality(VR) and augmented reality(AR) are two very popular issues concerning education. Besides education, they are also being applied in various areas like games, military, medicine and so on. Although these great technologies brings us lots of possibilities and conveniences, they still have some disadvantages that are worth thinking.
