Understanding Typography

Leading

Dictionary.com Definition:

noun: Printing.

The spacing between lines of photocomposed or digitized type Also called interlinear spacing.

What is Leading?

Leading is the spacing between the lines of text in a paragraph.  I helps to improve readability of the text making sure that the letting is not to compact therefore making it difficult to differentiate between the different lines.

How to Adjust Leading in Photoshop

To adjust the leading of your font in Photoshop, open the character palette, located under Window and then Character, and change the number in the leading field. The leading field is next to the type size. Don’t forget to highlight the text you want to change before adjusting it.

Kerning

Dictionary.com Definition:

noun: Printing.

The setting of two letters closer together than is usual by removing space between them.

What is Kerning?

Kerning refers to adjusting the space between two characters / letters within a piece of text in order to make it more visually appealing to an audience.  It is a method used within Typography to make text easier to read.

How to Adjust Kerning in Photoshop

You can adjust the kerning of a font in Photoshop through the same character palette that you use for leading. The kerning field is below the type size. It’s generally easier to use shortcuts for kerning, however. Place the cursor between the letters you want to kern and hold down the option key. Use the directional arrows to move the letters right or left until they're perfect.

Tracking

Dictionary.com Definition:

noun: Printing.

The spacing between characters in a line of text. This is defined when a font is designed but can often be altered in order to change the appearance of the text or for special effects. Tracking should not be confused with kerning which deals with the spacing between certain pairs of characters.

What is Tracking?

Tracking is used to adjust the spacing between characters in a piece of text equally.  This is usually once achieved once kerning has been applied and the text is then adjusted using effects.

Tracking should not be confused with kerning which is the distance between two pairs of characters.

Tracking

Tracking is often confused for kerning, but the concept is a little different. Tracking involves adjusting the spacing throughout the entire word. Once you've determined the right spacing between each letter, tracking can be used, with great restraint, to change the spacing equally between every letter at once.

Tracking is generally used to fill a space that’s larger or smaller than currently suits the type’s parameters or to make a single word seem airy and impressive. You should be very careful when changing the tracking, as it can quickly lead to difficulty in reading.

How to Adjust Tracking in Photoshop

In the character palette in Photoshop, you can change the tracking by adjusting the number in the field below kerning. As with kerning, you can select the text you wish to alter and hold down the option key, pressing the directional arrows to adjust.

Control Points and Handles

The Pen tool also uses handles in order to create curves from the start point to the end point.  The handles can be manipulated individually or together in order to create varied shapes.

Usually the control handles are manipulated together as this give the best result for a curved line.

What is a Bezier Curve?

A Bezier Curve is a vector line which is created based on control points.  The control points (handles) will allow a designer to make adjustments to the curve from the start point towards the end point.
