Course materials

Senior markers are required to mark to the highest level of accuracy, ensure marker reliability and provide feedback to markers. Some senior markers will be required to deliver training.

Explain how your relevant experience adds value to the role of senior marker. (300 words)

Personal statement 2

Describe what you believe are the critical aspects of External assessment marking and how senior markers play a part in this system. (100 words)

Background

The following training task is based on the responses to the External Assessment Trials for English in Phase 1, where students were required to write an analytical essay in response to questions about the plays Macbeth and The Crucible. For these activities, responses will be considered in terms of cohesive techniques.

This task will focus on making judgments about how cohesive techniques contribute to:

1. the development of ideas within paragraphs

2. the fluency of expression, incorporating references to the novel and surrounding material concisely and without disruption.

For each student response, you will be asked to make these judgments and, for each, write a justification.

Cohesive techniques

Cohesive techniques is a broad term for the range of strategies used to maintain cohesion while developing ideas. A non-exhaustive list of techniques includes:

  • cohesive ties
  • contextualising phrases
  • word associations
  • pronoun references
  • sequencing
  • topic sentences
  • concluding sentences.
