A project manager needs to be agile, intuitive and very dynamic as he/she ensures that a project is well initiated, planned, designed, briefed,  implemented, monitored and evaluated to meet the sponsors objectives. A project manager needs to be able to listen well, ask good questions and influence people at all levels of a business.

Having a good in depth understanding of the eight sequential steps to project management is essential to the success of the project. Frequently many projects will be handled simultaneously and the manager needs good systems to keep every stage on track.

Following the Eight steps of successful project management as shown in diagram 2 will ensure a company of the successful execution of projects. It is key to start with a very clear, detailed scope that represents information obtained from all the key stakeholders. The work breakdown is included in the scope and time is spent setting the project specifications for each sub-unit in the work breakdown. The sub-units are then sequenced and time allocated to each step. A critical path is created. The cost of each sub unit is determined and a budget drawn up and risk assessed. Then the important step of assigning responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities.  Controlling work in progress or the quality  is now critical and mechanisms used to control the progress. Communicating progress, giving feedback and handling re planning takes place if problems arise. Wrapping up the project with sound evaluating the effectiveness is the final stage.
