Project Management Basics & Best Practices

This course will cover the basic principles of Project Management  and Systems Design  as applied to BSC Management, Inc. related projects.  Upon completing this course, participants will be able to distinguish the difference between operational tasks and full scale projects and will be able to determine the need for the practical application of Best Practices in the design and execution of properly identified projects.  In addition, participants will be able to employ the suggested Project and System Design methodologies discussed in this course, incorporating them into real time, new and ongoing projects.

Unit 1: Defining Project Management

What is Project Management

Project management is officially defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. It has always been practiced informally but sometime in the mid twentieth century it evolved into its own profession.

There are many different variations of the process but generally the process falls into 5 distinct groups:

  • Initiating
  • Planning
  • Executing
  • Monitoring and Controlling
  • Closing

Realistically, the level of the project you are working on will determine how in depth you need to delve into each phase. Some really simple projects may not involve as much planning or analysis.  No matter how simple your project is, you will benefit from applying some basic project management methodology.

BSC has created an outline of the process normally utilized when initiating a new client project.  Ideally, everyone involved with client committees should familiarize themselves with this process as they will often be faced with new project requests and suggestions.   Referring to this process will guide you along the proper steps in getting started in investigating any project request.

Please download and review the Client Project Management Process and keep it handy as you progress through this course. Each phase of the BSC process will be covered in detail in it's own course section.

What is a Project?

As defined by the Project Management Institute :

A project is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and end in time, and therefore defined scope and resources.

And a project is unique in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal. So a project team often includes people who don’t usually work together – sometimes from different organizations and across multiple geographies.

Project Examples:

The development of software for an improved business process, the construction of a building or bridge, the relief effort after a natural disaster, the expansion of sales into a new geographic market — all are projects.

And all must be expertly managed to deliver the on-time, on-budget results, learning and integration that organizations need.
