What is Twitter?

Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and read messages restricted to 140-characters, which are called "tweets".

Registered users can post and read tweets, but those who are unregistered can only read them.

Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS or mobile device app

Twitter was created in 2007 and now has 15 million UK users and 236 million users globally

Tips for Tweeting

Use images/videos where ever possible. Tweets with images receive 18% more click throughs, 89% more likes, and 150% more retweets

77% of Twitter users feel more positive about a brand when their Tweet has been replied to

Try not to abbreviate too much keep it in English

Tag people in images, using their @, this will appear in their timeline and give more visibility and they are more likely to retweet

Always remember

Twitter is a minefield of trolls, abusive tweets, political agendas, and quite a lot of nonsense!

Think before you tweet! Who will be reading? Would you say it in public? What would you think if you read that tweet?

Nugent’s Social Media Use Policy states that Employees MUST: Not make discriminatory or offensive comments about work colleagues, service users or third parties. Not communicate with service users or their families.

Tweets are still subject to copyright, data protection and Freedom of Information legislation, the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and other legislation. They must also operate in line with Nugent’s Equality and Diversity statement.

This advice is to protect you, as well as Nugent and it’s staff and service users. It is not there to gag you or stop you talking positively about your work
