Material Handling Equipment cause approximately1 in 4 disabling work injuries per year

However these injuries can be avoided if a worker is safety conscious, understands their safety obligations, knowledge of operating procedures and stays alert when using material handling equipment.

Safety measures while working around Hoists

- While a crane is in operation never stand, walk or work directly underneath it.

- Never hitch a ride on the cranes hook, lifting equipment or load in motion.

- Inspect the hoist chain regularly and look for kinks and twists or other apparent damage and ensure the hook has a working safety latch.

- Ensure the correct lifting gear is used and is securely attached to the load also ifnecessary use protection if your load has sharp edges.

- Ensure there are no parked car's or equipment under the hoist.

- When opening the nacelle hoist hatch always attatch yourself


Operation Check Daily

- Check the control with up and down operation also the emergency stop button is functioning properly.

- Check for any abnormal noise coming from the hoist during operating procedure.

- Check the hook, safety latch is working properly, there is no deformation or significant corrosion.

- Check the up and down limit switches are working

  • You are obliged to understand all safety rules and regulations to ensure you and your fellow work mates are protected

  • Use faulty equipment. It is not your responsibility that all lifting equipment is inspected before hoisting operations.
  • Overload yourself physically when lifting loads and overload your hoist.
  • With loose and/or unbalanced loads ensure the material to be hoisted is secure and sits level before you start your lift.
  • Play jokes on your fellow workers as it is no laughing matter if the joke goes wrong if someone gets injured and your actions may cause instant dismissal.

Before handling a load

Before using the hoist you should check 2 steps first:

First, always wear your safety equipment!


Hard hat

Hard hats are designed to protect your head from overhead dangers. Make sure you inspect it before use andis adjusted your requirements so it fts correctly.

Safety boots

Safety boots and shoes ensure feet are protectedagainst falling objects and shall be equipped with steeltoe caps and non-slip soles also if required have approved instep protection.

Gloves

Gloves help to protect the hands from dirt, grease, oils,sharp items and abrasive materials ensure the correctgloves are used for your specifc requirements.

Work clothing

Safety work clothing helps protect a worker from sparks,dust, chemicals etc ensure your clothing is durable and insound condition before use and allows free movement butcannot catch or snag on other objects while working.

Second, always adopt the right attitde for work!


  • Are you capable?

Understand your own skills and limitations and tackle the work you know and can handle also ask for training if required.

  • Don't cut corners

Know and follow regulations as short cuts prove an accident will happen also use equipment for its intended use.

  • Don't rush

Work at a steady pace and don’t rush as this decrease the possibility of having accidents. An over tired worker is an accident waiting to happen.

  • Anything could happen

Any type of work can be unpredictable so be alert of your surrounds for any unexpected hazards.

  • Don't Chance it

Take the time that is necessary to do the job as rushing your work may cause serious injury to you and others working around you.

  • Check for abnormal noises coming from the hoist

  • Check the up and down controls and also the emergency stop button
  • Check what time it is?
  • Check the hook for any abnormalitys

Operation of the Hoist

Procedures for using the hoist.



Always read the operators manual to familiarize you with the hoist is safe use, inspection, lubrication and general maintenance.



Always check the load capacity you require to ensure a suitable chain or wire hoist is selected for the work intended and avoid overloading hoists.



Always keep your attention on your hoisting operations at all times.



Never hoist a load while there is a twist or kink in the chain present and for two fall units always check that the hook block has not been turned over.



Never stand underneath or near a load during hoisting operations and keep an eye on fellow works working around you.




Avoid snagging or catching the hook or the load on fIxed objects.



Always operate a hoist in a vertical method and never use a hoist to drag a load laterally of longitudinally



When you are fnished using a hoist always stow the hook so it will not become an obstruction and shutdown with stop button and/or isolating switch.

  • Use the hoist in the reverse order.
  • Stop using the hoist and go do something else.
  • Stop using the hoist, change the electrical phase or ask a competent person if you are not able to do it.
