Background

This task will focus on the sample instrument which is in the Supplementary materials from the 2017 External Assessment Trial for Physical Education. You will be asked to make judgments based on evidence in responses.

Question 9 (150 words)

An athlete completes a 30-second run at high intensity. After fully recovering, the same athlete completes a 120-second run at high intensity. Compare and contrast the energy system contributions during the 30-second run with the energy system contributions during the 120-second run.

Response

A 30 second run at high intensity requires an athlete to sprint as fast as they can over a short distance. A good athlete could cover a distance of about 200 metres during this time. For this effort, an athlete would need lots of muscular power. They would require an explosive start to get to maximum speed and intensity as quickly as possible. Because the run would be over after only 30 seconds, this runner does not need much muscular endurance or oxygen system.

The 120 second run is very different however. The runner for this run would need much more muscular endurance as they are running four times as long as the 30 second run. Muscular power and explosive energy would not be needed to do well in this performance. This run would need more muscular endurance and oxygen system to complete at a fast intensity.

Question 10 (150 words)

Recommend a training method to improve an athlete’s energy requirements for a 120-second run at high intensity. Justify your recommendation by referring to the training principle of specificity.

Response

To improve performance in a 120-second run at high intensity, an athlete could utilise continuous training as a training method.  Continuous training is used by athletes to target their aerobic (oxygen) energy system.  While a 120-second run would rely on the two anaerobic energy systems in the early stages of the performance, a well-developed aerobic energy system would still be specific to this performance, especially in the latter half of the performance.  This is because as exercise continues in duration, the body relies more on oxygen to deliver energy to the muscles.  An athlete with an improved aerobic capacity would be able to maintain a higher level of intensity for extended durations than an athlete with a poor aerobic energy system.  For continuous training, I would recommend the athlete complete long continuous runs.  Additionally, an athlete may wish to incorporate some fartlek training into their continuous training. Adding sprint intervals will increase the specificity of training to target high intensity efforts and the lactic acid energy system.

Question 11 (400 words)

Response

This training session would not be appropriate for improving my performance in touch football.  My performance in touch football requires that I have good anaerobic energy with less emphasis on aerobic capacity.  This is because most my touch performance is short sprints with periods of active rest.  I typically spend approximately 3 minutes on the field at a time before substituting however this 3 minutes of play is not typically continuous, high-intensity work. Most sprints, and efforts of high-intensity last between 5 and 15 seconds.  Each period of work is usually followed by a similar duration of rest or low-intensity effort.  For this reason, the durations shown in the interval training session are too long to be suitable for my performance in touch.  90 second intervals will develop my lactic acid and aerobic energy system while my performance in touch makes use of the creatine phosphate energy system during short sprints.  The 10 repetitions of 30 second sprints would be more appropriate to my touch performance, however, they are still too long.  The most important problem with this training session is the level of intensity.  It lists the intervals as being 75% intensity.  This level of intensity is more appropriate for developing the aerobic energy system during long durations of continuous exercise.  Continuous exercise at this intensity would not be appropriate for improving my fitness for touch football. The warm-up and cool-down for this training session are appropriate for a touch football training session.  The warm-up helps develop flexibility which is useful for touch as it provides improved range of motion and helps prevent injury which is important for high intensity exercise.  The warm-up also incorporates a modified game allowing touch specific activities and drills to be practiced. In conclusion, this is not a very effective training session for improving the energy systems necessary for a typical touch football performance.

Question 11 (400 words)

Response

The physical activity I have participated in during this term is netball. The majority of my time spent playing is sub-maximal, as I generally play as a goal keeper. However, there are periods of high-intensity work throughout my performance that require me to move quickly into position, into space, or evade opposition players. These efforts typically last for a short duration of 5–10 seconds. Sometimes my performance requires me to repeat this high-intensity effort with little rest but most of the time, I get enough rest to recover before I need to work hard again. The training session uses interval training to improve my fitness; however, the duration and intensity of the training is not appropriate for the requirements of my performance. The session begins with durations of 90 seconds with 180 seconds rest between efforts. While this form of long interval training would help me develop a good lactic acid energy system, 90-second durations are not specific to my performance, as the majority of my high-intensity work is done over a much shorter duration of 10–15 seconds. The intensity of the 90-second efforts in the interval session are also not specific to my performance as the intensity is only moderate at 75%. An intensity of above 85% is best for improving lactic acid energy systems. The third set in the training session contains shorter intervals, lasting only 30 seconds, with 30 seconds rest between efforts. This set of intervals is far more appropriate for the needs of my performance; however, there is no intensity listed for this set of intervals. In order to improve the training session and make it more specific to my needs, I would change both the intensity and duration of the intervals to more closely align with my performance requirements. I would suggest sets of short intervals ranging in duration from 10–15 seconds of work. This more closely mirrors my efforts in a game of netball. I would ensure that the level of intensity is closer to 90% or higher. This will ensure that I am training to improve anaerobic energy systems such as the lactic acid system. I would aim for rest periods between each repetition that are similar in duration to that of my performance and make them active rest periods since this will facilitate recovery of lactic acid and be more specific to the sub-maximal periods of work in my performance in netball.
