Boating Safety

What are five key safety tips when boating?

  • Stay to the left, go as fast as you can, wear a pink lifejacket, speedos to be worn by all on board, alcohol should be on board at all times.
  • Skipper is in charge, Lifejacket to be worn, two forms of communication, weather conditions checked, alcohol avoided.

How is a lifejacket fitted correctly?

  • Sizing in the water when required
  • Make sure you have checked the size before you are on board, lifejackets should be snug and shouldn't ride up.
  • Put the lifejacket on and have someone lift up on the shoulders. The lifejacket shouldn't come past you chin.

What emergency equipment should be stored on board?

  • Fishing rod, spare gun, bait, fish finder, speedos
  • Radio, cell phone, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, lifejackets, flares.

How would you enter and exit a boat safely?

  • Jumping
  • Three points of contact at all times
  • Head first

What would you do if you went overboard?

  • Panic, shout, swim as fast as you can towards the shore/boat
  • Stop, think, assess and respond.
  • Raise you hand

Bystander Rescue

Use the four R's when rescuing someone from the water. What are these?

  • Recognise - Someone is in trouble Respond - Call for help, look around you to see what you can use to rescue Rescue your patient by providing floatation and retrieve with a rope or poll Revive - Check DRSABCD - Place in the side stable position
  • Recognise - Someone is in trouble Respond - Call for help, look around you to see what you can use to rescue Rescue - swim out to your patient and tow to shore Revive - Check DRSABCD - Place in the recovery position
