Triage

A review of basic triage, and implementation during a MCI

Triage

Definition

Triage

Merriam-Webster defines it as "the sorting of and allocation of treatment to patients and especially battle and disaster victims according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors ". The most good for the most people is another look at it.

Implementation

Implementation

We implement triage when patients exceed our immediate resources. Large scale incidents are obvious, but smaller incidents also meet the definition of when we should triage. A motor vehicle accident with three patients, for example.

Our triage assessment of each patient must be quick, using very basic criteria.

  • Primary triage is done at the incident site.
  • Secondary triage is done in the treatment areas (either at patient arrival, or during their treatment).

Criteria

Triage sorts patients into one of four priority categories:

  1. Minor
  2. Delayed
  3. Immediate
  4. Deceased
